Join Straight To The Source on an exciting new tour for 2018 to explore The Riverina, one of the most productive and diverse agricultural regions in the country, giving rise to their claim of being the “food bowl of Australia”. On this trip, you will learn all about organic soybean, rice and grain production, as well as discover the region’s sugar plums and jujubes.
On arrival in Griffith NSW, we’ll kick-off the tour with a visit to an organic grain, poultry and vegetable producer with a focus on environmental sustainability and biodiversity. Their staple crops are soybeans and chickpeas and during our visit, we’ll learn all about their rotational production cycle, including seeing the soybean crop before it is harvested.
We will also visit Prickle Hill Produce, a 40-hectare family-owned farm planted with sugar plums for the fresh and dried fruit (prunes) markets, and, Jujubes (Chinese red dates). We’ll finish the day with a campfire dinner showcasing local and regional produce.
After breakfast the next morning, we’ll depart for a day on an award-winning, family-owned and run farm producing a single-origin rice that is grown, milled and packed on the farm. We will discover the differences between rice varieties and production methods; the farm, is an environmentally-responsible user of the water from the Murrumbidgee River, with the rice paddies providing a thriving habitat for native animals and wildlife.
